SUMMARY
The Mechanical / HVAC Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment. Identifying maintenance risks on equipment. Diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults for HVAC systems. Cleaning, adjusting, and repairing mechanical and incineration systems. The Mechanical/HVAC Technician will work under the supervision of a Maintenance Supervisor but will have considerable technical independence, requiring direction only in cases where unusual problems or requiring major deviations from original instructions arise. Administrative or technical superiors will review work during or upon completion of the job for compliance with instructions and for conformity to established standards of maintenance, installation or repair.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
• Installs and repairs air conditioning, refrigerating and cooling systems according to blueprints and engineering specifications.
• Lays out reference point for installation of structural and fund functional components, using structural measuring instruments, such as tape, transit, plump bob, levels, and square.
• Drills holes and installs mounting brackets and hangers into floor and walls of building.
• Lifts and aligns components into position, using hoist or block and tackle.
• Assembles structural and functional components, such as motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, cores, and pipes by screwing, bolting, riveting, welding and brazing.
• Cuts, threads, and connects pipe to functional components.
• Pumps specified gas or fluid into system.
• Starts system, observes operation, reads gauges and instruments, and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls, and pumps to control malfunctioning systems and tests components, using electrical mechanical and pneumatic testing equipment
• Replace or adjusts defective or worn parts to repair systems
• Insulates shells and cabinets of systems.
• Installs wiring to connect components to electric power source; overhauls and services refrigeration units by repairing, replacing, or adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors and water and vacuum pumps.
• Act as liaison for airport regarding regulated waste program and disposal to include training, execution and compliance
• Tests valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings.
• Removes and installs motors, thermostat and humidistat; adjust expansion valves.
• Checks and adds gas to refrigeration.
• Conducts inspection and repair of generators to include light maintenance, changing fluids, and monitoring fuel levels.
• Checks gauges and makes inspections for preventive maintenance.
• May cut and weld steel members using flame cutting and welding equipment.
• Reports need for handling and equipment repairs.
• Performs other related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Knowledge of air cooled and centrifugal chill water systems. Comprehensive knowledge of theory, principles and techniques involved in performing refrigeration installation, repairs and maintenance
• Knowledge of standard local and Federal Refrigeration Regulations including the Life Safety Codes, Building Codes, National Electrical Codes and NFPA Codes
• Knowledge of pneumatic controls, duct systems, and air handling unit repairs and maintenance
• Ability to diagnose malfunction in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment and to effect necessary repairs.
• Ability to install and repair and do comprehensive preventative maintenance on air conditioning, refrigerating and cooling systems according to blue-prints, maintenance manuals and Engineering Specifications and related electrical work.
• Ability to maintain records and set-up refrigeration corrective and preventive maintenance program.
• Experience in refrigeration installation, repair, and maintenance work.
• Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment the mechanical trade.
• Knowledge of safety requirements.
• Some knowledge of the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical trades as they apply to systems.
• Knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and HVAC systems.
• Skill in the use and care of testing and diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to distinguish differences in wire, cable color, sizes and types.
• Ability to read and interpret diagrams, blueprints and generator and motor control diagrams.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair cable problems.
• Ability to make time material and cost estimates of small installations and repair jobs
• Ability to create reports of work performed and other related documents and do work related paperwork
• Ability to work long hours standing and do manual work.
• Good health and physical agility sufficient to climb poles, ladders, etc.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and all other persons contacted while at work
• Able to work overtime and be available for after-hours call-ins or emergencies.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a SIDA badge.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
• Three (3) years of experience working in the Refrigeration/Air Conditioning field.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Preferred Associate’s Degree in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology or equivalent certification.
• Possess or ability to obtain certifications in incineration and handling regulated waste.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple and complex, technical correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend standard units of measurement and ability to perform simple arithmetic.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Must possess a valid Drivers’ License as a condition of employment.
• Must possess Type I and Type II Refrigeration Technician Certification.
