POSITION: Heavy Equipment Operator
REPORTS TO: Facilities Supervisor
LOCATION: USVI Territory
AIRPORT: Henry E. Rohlsen (St. Croix)
SUMMARY
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe operation of various heavy motorized machinery used to support airport ground operations. This role is essential for maintaining the airport’s infrastructure, roads, shoulders, ditches, parking areas, ensuring airfield paved areas cleanliness, and other crucial maintenance tasks. The position requires skill in operating equipment and a commitment to safety protocols in a busy airport environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Operates heavy equipment such as tractors, mowers, sweepers, loaders, forklifts, airports vehicles and tugs for airport operations.
• Perform pre- and post-operation inspections of heavy equipment to ensure operational safety and report any issues to the maintenance supervisor.
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of parts, tools, and supplies for equipment repairs; reporting low stock levels as needed.
• Assist in removal debris on runways, taxiways, and other areas as part of the airport’s operations areas.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance performed, and any issues encountered in accordance with company policies.
• Assist in loading and unloading and handling supplies, materials and equipment; make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; and assist in changing tires and mounting attachments.
• Assist with minor repairs on light and heavy motorized equipment, performing as instructed and directed such work as cleaning, repairing, renewing, installing new or replacement parts and components and assembling and connecting heavy equipment mechanisms and linkages, refuels, services, lubricates, washes, cleans, and flushes out equipment as necessary.
• Follow all safety protocols including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to airport environmental, health and safety guidelines.
• Employee performs other related work as required
• This position requires shift work.
• This position requires emergency response work, if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
• Ability to work outdoors under various types of weather conditions
• Knowledge of heavy motorized equipment operation
• Ability to work proficiently operating heavy equipment and auxiliaries
• Ability to work industriously without immediate supervision
• Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to heavy motorized equipment and auxiliaries.
EDUCATION
• High school diploma or GED required; additional training in heavy equipment operation or mechanics is a plus.
• Heavy equipment operator certification is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE
• 2 years of experience in heavy equipment operation, ideally in an airport or industrial setting.
• Comfortable working in a high-noise environment with appropriate safety gear
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid Driver’s License as a condition of employment.
